104 Total Cards
You will use 2 standard decks, or 104 cards. The goal is to sort the cards into completed King-to-Ace sequences by suit.
10 Tableau Columns
At the start of the game, 54 cards are dealt and spread across 10 tableau columns. The top card in each tableau column is face-up, while the other cards are dealt face-down. The tableau is your main playing area and where you will build your descending sequences. Revealing hidden cards is the most important strategy for successful spider solitaire.
50-Card Stockpile
The remaining 50 cards comprise the stockpile. The stockpile will consist of 5 rounds of cards. During each round I will deal one card to each of the tableau columns. Timing will be important; if you draw from the stockpile too soon, you may block moves.
8 Foundation Piles
We want to build eight, full King-to-Ace sequences of the same suit. On completion of the eight sequences, cards are added to a foundation pile, freeing up tableau columns.
Your goal is to clear the board and build 8 complete descending suit sequences.
The first several moves should always focus on suit-matched sequences because if they are the same suit, they are much easier to move to an eventual foundation.
Construct Descending Runs
Prioritize building descending runs comprised of cards all from the same suit, since they can be moved as a single unit, thereby allowing you to clear multiple cards and keep all options open for future play.
Create Space by Emptying Columns
Empty columns offer more options when attempting to move either sequences or lay down high cards (e.g. Kings), and clearing a column early in the game gives you a huge advantage.
Don't Waste the Stock
When dealing with the stock, be strategic and don't just draw from it for the sake of drawing. If more cards are drawn than needed, they could end up blocking future movements. Instead, save the stock for when you are ready to finish a key sequence or to access key cards in your pursuit.
Build and Clear Sequences
Construct and clear complete descending suit-matched runs to deliver to the foundation piles. Each sequence you clear will allow you to remove cards from the tableau and make it easier to build additional sequences in the future.
Uncover Face-Down Cards First
You should always focus on uncovering face-down cards on the tableau - don't forget that.
Create Empty Columns When You Can
An empty column is one of the best holding places for a card or series of cards.
Move Kings/Queens to an Empty Column
Being able to place a King or Queen into an empty column gives you more options for building long runs.
Be Smart with Undo
If you make a move that you realize blocks your next steps, don't hesitate to use the undo button a couple of times to decide on another alternative route.
